Once you chosen your theme, head over to the [**Design > Theme Editor**](https://admin.freewebstore.com/editor.aspx) section of your control panel. When you first visit this section, you will be prompted to edit certain aspects of your theme straight away, such as:

* Choosing your Color Palette

If you need any further help with your Theme Editor, head over to the [Theme Editor section of this help site](/design/theme-editor).

### Step 3: Adding products

Any online store is pretty useless without any products to sell. So the next step is just that, adding products!

To add products to your store, head over to the [**Manage > Products > Add a Product**](https://admin.freewebstore.com/manage_products?prodNew=true) section of your control panel. This section will allow you to add products to your store.

Alternatively, if you already have a **Comma Separated Value** **(CSV)** file of products you would like to import, you can use the 14-day free trial to upload your CSV via the [**Manage > Products > Import**](https://admin.freewebstore.com/manage_products_importv2) section.

Simply click on the page you would like to edit and fill in the text editors as required. Don't forget to save though, you want to keep your work :-).

If you need any further help with editing your pages, head over to the [**Manage > Pages**](/manage/pages) section of this site.

### Step 5: Get Paid

Probably one of the most important steps in setting up an online store, setting up a payment gateway so that your customers can pay for their order.

To set up a payment gateway, head over to the [**Orders > Payment Gateways**](https://admin.freewebstore.com/orders_payment_gateways) section of your control panel to view and setup an available payment gateway. For some gateways, you will need to register for an account with your chosen provider.

For more help setting up a payment gateway, head over to the [**Orders > Payment gateways**](/orders/payment-gateways) section of this site.

### Step 6: Where do you ship to?

Another important step of setting up your online store with freewebstore is shipping. You only want the customers to be able to check out if the you can ship to their region. So we can set this up dynamically in the cart pages of your store, you will need to set up some shipping rules.

To set up shipping rules for your store, head over to the [**Manage > Shipping**](https://admin.freewebstore.com/manage_shippingv2) section of your control panel.

You will need to set up rules for every region you are able to ship to. These rules can be based on costs and regions set up by a courier service of your choice, or you can use the shipping labels feature (if available in your region. US or UK).

If you need any further help with your store, head over to the [**Manage > Shipping**](/manage/shipping) section of this site.

### Step 7: Your Domain Name (the home of your store)

The domain name of your store is where your store lives on the internet. Customers will use this name to navigate to your store within their preferred browser. You can simply change your free URL name that we provide you with when you first register, but having a custom domain name on your store is important for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) purposes.

To buy or attach a custom domain to your store head over to the [**Marketing > Domain Names**](https://admin.freewebstore.com/marketing_domainsv4) section of your control panel.

#### Custom Domain Benefits

1. **Professionalism and Branding:** A custom domain lends credibility and professionalism to your business. It creates a memorable and unique brand identity, establishing trust among customers. It's easier for people to remember and associate your store with a custom domain, which can positively impact brand recognition and customer loyalty.
2. **Improved SEO:** Search engines tend to favor websites with custom domains over those using free subdomains. A custom domain allows you to use keywords relevant to your business, which can boost your search engine rankings. This can lead to increased visibility and traffic to your online store, potentially resulting in more sales.
3. **Enhanced Trust and Credibility:** Customers often perceive businesses with custom domains as more trustworthy compared to those using generic or free domains. A unique domain name demonstrates that you're invested in your brand and serious about your online presence. This can positively influence customer confidence and encourage more sales.
4. **Control and Flexibility:** With a custom domain, you have greater control over your website's features, design, and functionality. It allows for flexibility in creating personalized email addresses, which can further strengthen your brand image. Additionally, you have the freedom to switch hosting providers or make backend adjustments without affecting your domain name, ensuring continuity for your customers.
5. **Ownership and Portability:** Having your own domain means you own the rights to that web address. This ownership provides stability and security for your online business. Moreover, if you decide to change your e-commerce platform or hosting service, you can take your domain with you, maintaining your brand identity and avoiding disruption to your customer base.

These benefits collectively contribute to a stronger online presence, increased credibility, and a more memorable brand, ultimately leading to better opportunities for sales and growth.

#### Tips to keep in mind when choosing a domain name

1. **Keep it Memorable:** Choose a domain name that is easy to remember. It should be catchy, concise, and easy to spell. Avoid complex spellings, hyphens, or numbers that might confuse potential visitors.
2. **Reflect Your Brand:** Your domain should align with your brand identity. It could include your brand name or a relevant keyword that represents your products or services. Make it indicative of what your store offers.
3. **Consider Keywords:** Incorporate relevant keywords into your domain if possible. This can improve your site's visibility in search engine results, potentially attracting more organic traffic.
4. **Be Unique:** Ensure your domain name stands out and isn't easily confused with existing brands or competitors. Check for trademark conflicts to avoid legal issues.
5. **Keep it Simple:** A shorter domain name is often more effective. It’s easier to type, remember, and share. Aim for a name that’s concise and straightforward.
6. **Avoid Limiting Names:** Consider your future plans. Avoid overly specific names that might limit your business growth or expansion into new product lines or markets.
7. **Check Availability:** Use domain name search tools to check for availability. Your desired domain might already be taken, so have a few alternatives in mind.
8. **Choose the Right Extension:** The domain extension (.com, .net, .org, etc.) matters. While .com is the most popular and widely recognized, other extensions might suit your business or industry better. Consider country-specific extensions if you primarily serve a specific region.
9. **Think Long-Term:** Choose a domain name that you can envision using for the long term. Changing your domain later can be disruptive and might affect your brand recognition and SEO efforts.
10. **Social Media Compatibility:** Check if the domain name is available as a username on major social media platforms. Consistency across your website and social media handles can help with brand recognition.

By considering these tips, you can select a domain name that not only represents your brand effectively but also contributes to your online store's success and growth.

If you need any further help with domain names, head over to the [**Marketing > Domain Names**](/marketing/domains) section of this site.

### Step 8: Marketing

Now that you have the bare bones of your store, from Branding, products to sell, a solid domain name and content galore...market, market, MARKET!

No online store is **EVER** successful without marketing. It isn't an exact science, but you need to find what works for you.

There are many ways to attack the marketing world:

1. **Optimize for SEO:**
 * Conduct keyword research to understand what your audience is searching for.
 * Optimize your product descriptions, titles, and meta tags with relevant keywords.
 * Create valuable, original content like blog posts or guides related to your products/services to drive organic traffic.
2. **Utilize Social Media:**
 * Identify the platforms your target audience frequents and establish a presence there.
 * Share engaging content, including product photos, videos, customer testimonials, and behind-the-scenes glimpses.
 * Run targeted ads on social media platforms to reach potential customers based on demographics, interests, and behavior.
3. **Leverage Influencer Marketing:**
 * Collaborate with influencers or bloggers in your niche who can promote your products to their audience.
 * Ensure the influencers align with your brand values and have an engaged following that matches your target demographic.
4. **Email Marketing:**
 * Build an email list by offering incentives like discounts or exclusive content.
 * Send personalized and targeted emails to your subscribers with product updates, promotions, and valuable content.
 * Implement automated workflows for abandoned cart reminders, welcome sequences, or post-purchase follow-ups to boost conversions.
5. **Offer Exceptional Customer Experience:**
 * Provide excellent customer service to build trust and loyalty.
 * Encourage and showcase customer reviews and testimonials to enhance credibility.
 * Implement loyalty programs, referral discounts, or exclusive offers to reward and retain customers.

If you need any further help with marketing within your control panel, you can head over to the [**Marketing** ](/marketing/marketing-overview)section of this site.

### When can I expect to start seeing sales?

The time it takes to start seeing sales on a new online store can vary significantly based on several factors:

1. **Product and Market:** If you offer unique products or cater to a niche market with high demand, you might see quicker sales. However, if your market is saturated or your products are similar to many others, it might take longer to stand out.
2. **Marketing Efforts:** The effectiveness of your marketing strategies plays a crucial role. If you have a solid marketing plan in place and effectively reach your target audience through various channels, it can expedite sales. Conversely, if your marketing efforts are not reaching the right audience or are less effective, it might take longer to generate sales.
3. **Brand Awareness:** Building brand awareness takes time. Initially, it might take longer to gain trust and recognition among potential customers. As your brand becomes more recognizable and trustworthy, sales can increase.
4. **Website Optimization:** The user experience, design, and functionality of your website influence sales. A well-designed, easy-to-navigate website with clear product descriptions and a smooth checkout process can encourage sales. If your website needs improvements, it might delay the sales process.
5. **Seasonality and Trends:** Certain products sell better during specific seasons or trends. Understanding your product's seasonality or market trends can impact how quickly you see sales.

Generally, it's realistic to expect some initial sales within the first few weeks to a few months after launching your online store. However, significant and consistent sales growth often takes time, typically several months to a year or more, as you refine your marketing strategies, build your customer base, and establish your brand.

Consistent effort, continuous optimization, and adapting to market feedback are essential for growing sales over time. Monitoring analytics, customer feedback, and adjusting your strategies accordingly will help in achieving better results.

# Generating Shipping Labels

A step-by-step guide detailing how to generate shipping labels for major providers for your orders within your freewebstore control panel.

Deciding how to send your packages to your customers can become quite a timely task when you have multiple orders to send. That's why we take out the middle man for you on freewebstore.

All you need to do is package your order, let us know the weight of your package and choose a shipping service you would like to use. Then, simply print out the label you generate for your package and stick it to your package. All you need to do then is drop your package off at any office or pick up shop that your chosen provider chooses.

### How do I generate a shipping label with freewebstore?

When your customer has made an order:

1. Log in to your control panel.
2. Go to **Orders > List All Orders**
3. **View** the order you would like to generate a label for.
4. When the order page has loaded, you will see a big panel in the middle of your screen asking if you are "Ready to ship Your Order?". To start the process click the "**Compare Rates**" button as seen in **figure 1** below.

![Figure 1](/files/xts8EQUmnXnbVfPcDmPh)

5\. Once you have clicked the button, a new window will pop up and you will see that it will automatically generate rates for the total weight of your order. We know that not everything can fit in one box, so you can use the slider provided to edit the weight specified for this package and retrieve new quotes. When you have found a service from the list that you would like to use, simply click the service to select and move on.

6\. When you have selected a service, you will be taken to a window that looks like **figure 2** below. From here, you can add another package if you have more than one package to send, edit your current packages or view a final summary of the packages and labels you are set to generate.

![Figure 2](/files/tAyhLhDAU62CwQSOLCoP)

7\. When you have chosen the relevant services for all of the packages you need to send, click "**View Final Quote**".

8\. You will now see a summary list of all the packages you are sending (similar to **figure 3** below). This information covers the weight expected in each package, the price each label will cost and the maximum dimensions of each package.

![Figure 3](/files/w6bRqkFIBBJf3UYzeFtK)

9\. If you have made a mistake or you wish to change a package, you can always click the back button that you will see in the top right of the window. When you are sure that you are happy with the labels you are set to print, check that you "**confirm that your package(s) fit the dimensions and weight selected**" and click "**Generate and Pay**". This will then generate your labels and download them to your device. If you do not have enough credit in your account, this button will take you to deposit credit.

10\. After printing your labels, stick them to the appropriate packages and take them to your nearest drop-off point.

The sooner you drop your package off with the shipping provider, the sooner your customer will receive their order.

{% hint style="info" %}
This feature is only available for domestic shipments for stores in the United Kingdom and the United States. Support for further regions will be rolled out at a later date.
{% endhint %}

Simple step-by-step instructions on how to view your customer's abandoned carts from within your Freewebstore Control Panel.

Around 70% of online consumers engage with your website but abandon their cart before checking out. “Abandoned Cart” provides you with all the information you need to implement your remarketing strategies. Collecting and sending a remarketing email one-day post abandonment will do one of three things:

* Win the order 10-15% of the time
* You’ll find out why the customer didn’t buy – which will help you improve your buying process
* You’ll create a great customer service moment that will leave a lasting impression on the customer

And for businesses in the European Economic Area (EEA) sending a remarketing email one-day post abandonment is totally legitimate under GDPR.

### How do I view my abandoned cart data?

1. Login to your Freewebstore Control Panel.

# Withdrawal Requests (EU Right of Withdrawal)

Note: this page is not about getting paid. If you're looking for how to receive your sales revenue, see Payment Gateways. "Withdrawal requests" here means the EU consumer right to withdraw from a purc

### What is the right of withdrawal?

Customers in the EU have a legal right to cancel most online purchases within 14 days of receiving them - often called the "cooling-off period" - without giving a reason. From 19 June 2026, EU law (Directive 2023/2673) goes a step further: online shops selling to EU consumers must offer a clearly labelled "withdraw from contract" function directly on their website. An email address or general contact form is no longer enough.

Freewebstore provides this function for you. When enabled, your store gets:

* A dedicated withdrawal page at yourdomain.com/withdraw-from-contract/
* An automatic link to it in your store's footer, on every page
* A simple, legally compliant form: the customer enters their name, email address and order number (plus an optional order date and reason), reviews their details, and confirms

The form follows your store's language settings - if your store runs multiple language packs, the form appears in the language your customer is browsing in. The wording can be translated like any other storefront text under Design > Languages.

### Turning it on (or off)

Go to Orders > Withdrawals in your control panel and use the toggle at the top of the page. That's it - the page and footer link appear on your store within a few minutes.

If you sell to customers in the EU, we strongly recommend enabling it before 19 June 2026.

### What happens when a customer submits a request?

1. The customer receives an automatic acknowledgment email recording the date, time and content of their withdrawal - the legal "acknowledgment of receipt" the directive requires.
2. You receive an email notification with the customer's details, their order reference and any reason given.
3. The request appears in Orders > Withdrawals in your control panel, where you can search, sort and filter requests, and mark each one as Actioned or Dismissed.
4. If the order number and email address match an order on your store, the request links straight to that order, and the order's page shows a clear WITHDRAWAL REQUESTED banner.

### What you need to do

Receiving and recording the request is handled for you - but acting on it is your responsibility as the seller:

* Under EU rules you must refund the customer within 14 days of receiving their withdrawal notice.
* Where goods have already been delivered, you may withhold the refund until you've received the goods back, or the customer provides proof of return shipment - whichever is earlier.
* Some goods are exempt from the right of withdrawal (e.g. perishable or personalised items) - if you believe a request isn't covered, contact the customer directly.

We also recommend that your store's Terms page describes your customers' right of withdrawal and includes the EU model withdrawal form text. The button satisfies the "function" requirement, but your terms still need to describe the right itself. If you're unsure about your obligations, seek your own legal advice for your market.

### Frequently asked questions

**Can I change the form's fields or wording?**

The fields are legally prescribed, so they can't be changed. The wording translates automatically with your store's language packs, and you can adjust translations under Design > Languages.

**A request doesn't match any of my orders - why?**

The customer mistyped their order number, or used a different email address than the one on the order. Check the reference manually against your orders list; the request is still valid even if it didn't auto-match.

**Does a withdrawal request cancel the order automatically?**

No. You stay in control - review the request, then process the refund and update the order yourself.

**I don't sell to the EU. Do I need this?**

The obligation applies to shops selling to EU consumers, wherever the shop itself is based. If you never sell to EU customers it's optional - the toggle is yours either way.

# Import Products

A step-by-step guide detailing how to Import your products to your free online store from within your Freewebstore Control Panel.

What is the Product Importer?

The Product Importer allows you to import a list of all your products in .CSV (Comma Seperated Values) format. These products could be from a third-party platform similar to freewebstore or even import products from a dropshipping company.

We do recommend that you start with just 10 items first, this is to ensure that your import will work. Once 10 items are uploaded successfully, you can then add the rest of your items to your CSV file and upload it.

### How do I import my products?

1. Log into your Freewebstore Control Panel.
2. Go to **Manage** > **Products** > **Import**.
3. Select the **Standard Import** option.
4. Add your .CSV file to the upload box or click inside the box to browse your File Explorer for the file you wish to upload.
5. Once you are happy with the file you would like to upload, click **Upload.**

{% hint style="info" %}
It generally takes less than 2 hours for an import to complete based on the number of products you have.
{% endhint %}

If your CSV file is not correctly formatted for our system, your Import may fail.

### Example CSV Files

To see how your CSV should look and the fields our system will expect, download our CSV templates below:

{% file src="/files/Uayh8tE5ONwW5rA6PBag" %}

{% file src="/files/bs28Jk2ppsvPrx8eupPl" %}

{% file src="/files/IKrWmCtAORmsv0GYtH9L" %}

###

### Important Information about Imports

* **If you are importing for the first time then we'd recommend uploading a small 10-product import file to test before you upload larger import files.**
* The first row of your CSV file should contain the column headings (such as Product Name, Category Name, Price etc.).
* The Category column can list multiple levels of sub-categories by separating each level with a semi-colon (;). For example, "Parent Category;Sub-Categories;Nested Sub-Category".
* Simply ignore the postage column to have all your products follow your default postage rules.

Custom search tags allow you to help the search bar on your store work a little better. It allows you to enter different terms that relate to the products that your customers may be looking for.

The search bar on your store currently returns products that match your product names exactly. For example, a customer may search for the term 'phone', but nothing on your store matches this term because all of your 'phone' products are named 'mobile' products.
