Age Verification

A step-by-step guide detailing how to integrate an Age Verification pop-up to your free online store from within your Freewebstore Control Panel.

If you sell goods that aren't suitable for children, the law may require you to check a visitor's age before they can use your store.

Age verification covers your store with a pop-up when someone visits. They must click to confirm their age before they can browse. Anyone who chooses to leave is sent away from your store.

On the new design system age verification is an app called Age Restriction, in the Website Theme editor.

Turn on age verification

1. Log in to your Freewebstore Control Panel.

2. Go to Design > Website Theme.

3. Click Apps on the left, then Age Restriction.

4. Switch Enable Age Restriction on.

5. Fill in the pop-up:

   • Title and Message: what visitors read, for example "You must be 18 or over to access this store."

   • Enter Button Text and Leave Button Text: the wording on the two buttons.

   • Overlay Colour and Overlay Opacity: the colour of the screen behind the pop-up and how much of your store shows through it.

   • Remember for (days): how long before a visitor who has confirmed is asked again. To ask on every visit instead, tick Always ask on each visit.

6. Click Save.

To turn it off again, switch Enable Age Restriction off and click Save.

Can't see the pop-up on your own store?

Once you've clicked the enter button, your browser remembers it, so you won't see the pop-up again until that time runs out. To check it's working, open your store in a private or incognito window.

Older designs

If your store still uses one of our older designs:

1. Go to Design > Theme Editor.

2. Click Design in the top right, then Age Verification.

3. Click Enabled, then change the wording, colours and display settings if you want to.

4. Click Save.
