# Background

How to change the overall look of your store, including light and dark looks, and where background images fit in.

On the new design system there is no background image or background colour setting for your whole store. Instead you choose a light or dark look for your store, and your brand colours are used on top of it.

This is deliberate. The background and the text on it are matched by the design so that everything on your store stays easy to read, on every page and every block.

### Choose a light or dark look

1. Log in to your Freewebstore Control Panel.
2. Go to **Design > Website Theme**.
3. Click **Design** on the left, then **Theme**.
4. Click one of the looks shown, such as **Pure** or **Parchment** for a light background, or **Charcoal** or **Noir** for a dark one.

The change applies to your store as soon as you pick it. A theme changes the background colours behind your content; your brand colours stay the same.

On some designs you'll see **Dark mode** instead of **Theme**. Click it and turn on **Enable dark mode** for a dark background with light text, or turn it off for a light one.

### Change your colours

Your four brand colours are used for buttons, links and highlights across your store. To change them, see Colors.

### Add a picture behind your content

You can't put one image behind your whole store, but you can add blocks with a full-width photo and your own text over the top, anywhere on a page. **Hero Banner** works well at the top of a page. See Slideshow and Banners.

### Older designs

If your store still uses one of our older designs, you can set a background image or colour:

1. Go to **Design > Theme Editor**.
2. Click **Design** at the top right and choose **Background**.
3. In the panel on the left, tick **Enabled**.
4. Click **Add New Background Image** to choose a picture, or pick a **Color**. You can also set how the image repeats, its position and size.
5. Click **Save**.
